About the Artist
Arakkal was born in Chavakkad, Kerala. Having lost his parents at a very young age, Yusuf left for Bengaluru, to pursue his passion for painting. Arakkal earned his Diploma in painting from Chitrakala Parishnath College of Art, Bengaluru in 1973. He then attended the National Art Academy Community Studios, New Delhi in 1980, specializing in graphic-print making. He concentrates on the texture of his canvases and gives them a grainy, rough surface, reminiscent of timeworn, peeling cracked walls. Arakkal was honoured with several awards including the National Award in 1983; a Special Award at the Third Asian Art Biennale, Dhaka; and Lorenzo de Medici Silver medal at the 4th and 5th Florence International Biennale of Contemporary Art, 2003. His work has been exhibited at festivals and biennales around the world, including in France and Brazil. The artist lived and worked in Bengaluru until his death in 2016.
