About the Artist
Born in Nagpur in 1980, Valay Shende is a sculptor and video artist whose work reflects the complexities of contemporary urban society. A graduate of Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, with a BFA in Sculpture (2004), Shende also completed an artist residency at the Open Air Program, Point Éphémère, Paris, in 2006. His art uniquely combines intricate sculptures made from unconventional materials like metal discs and fibreglass with video installations, exploring themes of industrial modernity versus traditional beliefs. Shende’s work has been widely exhibited in India and internationally, including China, Canada, Abu Dhabi, Korea, Switzerland, and France. Notable solo shows include ‘Indian Encounters’ at Galerie Kashya Hildebrand, Zurich (2009), and ‘Recent Works’ at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai (2009). He has participated in prominent group exhibitions such as ‘Bombay Maximum City’ in Lille, France (2006). Valay views art as a medium to address societal challenges and envisions an ideal world through his creative practice.
