About the Artist

Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar, born in 1911 in Kattingeri, Karnataka, was a prominent Indian artist who fused Western techniques with Indian folk traditions. He trained at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai and later in Paris at the Academy Julian for Painting and Ecole Estinne for Graphics. Hebbar's works evolved from landscapes of Kerala, influenced by Paul Gauguin and Amrita Sher-Gill, to socially conscious pieces addressing themes like poverty and war. His art is known for its blend of impressionism and expressionism. He exhibited widely, holding shows in cities like New York, Paris, London, and across India. Hebbar participated in prestigious events like the Venice and São Paulo Biennales. His posthumous retrospectives were held at major venues, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Bangalore, New Delhi, and Mumbai. Hebbar earned numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan (1989), Padmasri (1961), and the Maharashtra Gourav Puraskar (1990). Hebbar passed away in 1996 at the age of 85.
