About the Artist
Gouri Vemula was born in 1972 in Hyderabad. Before becoming an artist, she was a national-level athlete. She holds multiple degrees, including a diploma in Painting, an MFA in Printmaking, and a master's in Drawing. Her work is known for its use of etching, dry point, and pen and ink drawing techniques. Vemula explores surreal landscapes filled with mythic figures- gods, goddesses, animals, and magical objects- blending traditional Indian motifs with contemporary elements to create a unique fusion of the real and the unreal. Gouri Vemula held her first solo show at Art Heritage in 2001 and has since exhibited at several venues, including Minaz Art Gallery, Hyderabad (2003), and India Fine Art Gallery, Mumbai (2012). She has also participated in group shows such as the Bharat Bhavan International Biennale of Printmaking and exhibitions in London and Hyderabad. Vemula has won multiple awards, including the National Award from the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society in 2002. Her work is featured in notable collections like the Alkazi Collection. The artist lives and works in Hyderabad.
