About the Artist

Gopal Sanyal was born in Cuttack, Orissa in 1933. The artist moved to Calcutta in 1948 and earned a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata in 1957. As a founding member of Calcutta Painters, he exhibited widely and was known for his drawings and paintings, often depicting everyday life and marginalized communities with a focus on itinerant musicians, perhaps because he was born into a family of classical musicians. Influenced by Cezanne, Sanyal skillfully blended anatomy and distortion in his work. He received numerous awards and his works are held in prestigious collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. In 1963, he received an award from the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, and in 1964 from the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS), New Delhi. The artist passed away in 2006.
