About the Artist

Satish Gujral was an internationally celebrated artist, muralist, sculptor, architect, and writer, widely recognized for his contributions to modernism in post-Independent India. Born in 1925 in Jhelum, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Gujral's early years were marked by a hearing disability, during which he developed a love for drawing and Urdu literature. His formal art education began at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore in 1939, followed by the JJ School of Art in Bombay in 1944, where he distanced himself from the Progressive Artists Group's European-inspired modernism to search for a uniquely Indian artistic identity. In 1952, Gujral was awarded a scholarship to study at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. Under the mentorship of Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, pioneers of the Mexican muralist movement, he developed his own style of large fresco murals, which he later executed in various prestigious commissions worldwide. Throughout his career, Gujral exhibited extensively across the globe, receiving numerous accolades, including three National Awards for painting and sculpture. His architectural prowess earned him the Padma Vibhushan in 1999, and he was honoured with the 'Order of the Crown' by the Belgian government for designing the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi. This architectural marvel was selected among the 1000 outstanding buildings of the 20th century by an international jury. Gujral passed away on March 26, 2020, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire.
