About the Artist

Rekha Rao, born in 1947 in Mumbai, studied art under the guidance of her renowned father, K.K. Hebbar. She developed a career grounded in abstract expression, creating personal, symbolic works that stripped away non-essentials. Rao held her first solo exhibition in Mumbai in 1969, followed by numerous shows in major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai, as well as internationally in Los Angeles, Sydney, Geneva, and Bonn. Her work has been exhibited at prominent galleries such as Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, Sakshi Gallery in Chennai, and Gallery Chemould in Mumbai, as well as abroad at I Serisawa Gallery in Los Angeles and Gallery Unverzagt in Germany. Her accolades include the Critics Award in 1971, the Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1977, and the Maharashtra State Award in 1978. Rao’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), the Lalit Kala Akademi (New Delhi), and the Singapore National Museum. She has participated in notable exhibitions like the IV Triennale of India (1978) and the Asian Biennale in Dhaka (1986). Currently based in Mumbai, her mixed media works combine abstraction with geometric or human forms, dictated by her emotional response to colour.
