About the Artist
Nankusia Shyam is a prominent Gond artist whose work is deeply inspired by nature, particularly the flora and fauna she encountered growing up in the village of Sonpuri, Madhya Pradesh. Her artistic journey began under the guidance of her husband, the renowned Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam. Initially hesitant, Nankusia learned to paint by filling in the colors of figures in Jangarh's works. Gradually, her husband encouraged her to create her own images, which eventually led her to establish her own artistic voice in the world of contemporary Gond art. After the passing of her husband, painting became a way for her to cope with his loss and continue her creative journey, helping her gain confidence and recognition in her field. Her work has been exhibited internationally in places like Dubai, Japan, and Sri Lanka, as well as across India. She has also illustrated the children’s book *Bulli and the Tiger*, published by Puffin Books. In 2002, she was honored with the Hasta Shilpa Vikas Nigam award by the Government of Madhya Pradesh. Nankusia continues to live and work at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, a hub of artistic activity.
