Akbar Padamsee was born in Mumbai and studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, before going to Paris and then New York in 1965 on a fellowship from the J. D. Rockefeller Foundation. Padamsee has experimented with various forms of art including photography, sculpture, film-making and computer graphics. He is, however, best known for his introspective 'Metascape' and figural paintings. Padamsee has exhibited his works in several solo exhibitions, including Past Forward, Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2013 and Sensitive Surfaces at Galerie Helene Lamarque, Paris, in 2008. Padamsee now lives and works in Mumbai.
