About the Artist
Krishna ShamraoKulkarni (1916-1994) – Kulkarni was born in Karnataka and after finishing his post-graduate art education at Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay in 1942, Kulkarni joined the Art Department of the Delhi Polytechnic in 1945. Kulkarni has said his works go beyond the influence of Indian culture and society but have a universal appeal to them. According to the artist, creativity stems from within and without. Kulkarni likened the creative process to the flowering of a tree – he describes the process as complex just as his perception of life. The artist has several awards and accolades to his credit. He was the Founding member of the Delhi Shilpi Chakra and the Triveni Kala Sangam as well as the Head of Department of Painting at Banaras Hindu University.He received three National Awards in the years 1955, 1962 and 1965. The artist passed away in 1994.
