Born in Tamil Nadu in 1943, C. Dakshinamoorthy graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, in 1966. In 1978 he completed a postgraduate course in Advanced Printmaking at the Croydon College of Design and Technology. The artist's journey began with childhood doodles and a fascination with the local potter's craft, captivated by how clay could be transformed into lifelike forms. At the Madras Government College, he studied under notable artists such as A.P. Santhanaraj, who taught him the expressive power of line, and S. Dhanapal, who inspired him to infuse his sculptures with personality and warmth. Dakshinamoorthy's sculptures often depict curvaceous female forms, torsos, and heads in materials like stone, marble, and granite, known for their lively and character-filled qualities. He draws influence from Ayyanar temple figures in Tamil Nadu and open-air Pallava reliefs at Mahabalipuram, as well as European masters like Modigliani, Picasso, and Brancusi.
