About the Artist

Laxman Pai, born in 1926, was a renowned Indian painter whose work is deeply rooted in his connection with nature and his experiences growing up in Goa. He earned his Diploma in Painting from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai (1947) and later studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris (1951). His education in Paris, the heart of the art world, greatly influenced his style, as did his active participation in India’s freedom struggle during the British rule. Pai's early work drew inspiration from Egyptian sculpture, gradually evolving into more fluid and vibrant compositions. Throughout his career, Pai was honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri (1985) and multiple National Awards from the Lalit Kala Akademi (1961, 1963). He also received the Nehru Award (1995) and was honoured by the Government of Goa in 1987. Pai’s solo exhibitions spanned several decades and international locations, including New Delhi, San Francisco, and Paris, with notable shows like “My Family Tree and Flowering Tree” (2005) and “Recent Paintings” (2000) at Dhoomimal Art Gallery, New Delhi. His retrospective exhibitions, such as the one at Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi (1989), celebrated his decades-long career and his unique visual language. The artist passed away in 2021.
