Ganesh Haloi was born in 1936 in Jamalpur, Mymensingh (now in Bangladesh). Haloi is an influential artist whose work reflects his connection to nature and landscapes. After moving to Kolkata in 1950 due to the partition of India, he began exploring themes of displacement and memory. Initially focused on landscapes and figures, Haloi's art evolved into abstract forms representing trees, water, and fields. His experience reproducing Ajanta murals profoundly impacted his style, blending nostalgia with abstraction. Haloi has received numerous awards and has been a member of the Society of Contemporary Artists since 1971.
