About the Artist
Born in Kolkata, West Bengal, Sajal Sasanka Sarkar is a painter, printmaker, and sculptor whose practice is defined by restless experimentation and material innovation. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Painting from Rabindra Bharati University in 1998, followed by a post-graduation in Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 2000. Sarkar’s oeuvre reflects a seamless dialogue between the real and the surreal. A master at combining diverse media, he continually expands the possibilities of surface and scale. A significant body of his recent work employs a unique, self-developed process using dyed and modified cotton along with banana pulp on canvas. The result is a series of richly textured, relief-like works that possess the physicality and presence of carved stone. Equally at ease with delicate watercolours and monumental canvases, Sarkar navigates material contrasts with remarkable control. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous prestigious national and international awards and grants. After years of living and working in Vadodara, Gujarat, he relocated to the United States, where he continues to evolve his multidisciplinary practice.
