Suddhasattwa Basu, born 1956, is a Delhi-based painter, illustrator, and animation filmmaker. A graduate in Fine Art from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, his artistic expertise spans painting, graphics, and murals. Basu’s works have been showcased in numerous solo, national, and international exhibitions, and his artistic sensibility extends seamlessly into book illustration and animation. Basu has illustrated 56 children’s books, three of which he authored. His book ‘The Song of a Scarecrow’ earned the Chitra Katha Award (2003) and an honourable mention at the Biennale of Illustrations in Bratislava, Slovak Republic. He was honoured with the AWIC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, presented by former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, for his contributions to children’s literature. A pioneer in animation, he directed India’s first animated TV series ‘Gayab Aya’ (1989), with his films featured at major festivals worldwide. Between 1998 and 2016, Basu served as a visiting faculty member at the College of Art, New Delhi.
