About the Artist
Debabrata De was born in 1959 in West Bengal. The artist received his Diploma in Fine Arts from the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Calcutta, in 1989. He has had several solo exhibitions, including shows at Tagore Art Gallery (1989), Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta (1990), Rashtriya Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1997), Colour & Brush Commercial Gallery, Mumbai (2006), and Sanskriti Art Gallery, Kolkata (2008). He has been recognized with awards from the All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society (AIFACS), New Delhi, in 1997, 1998, and 2002. The artist works in bronze and terracotta to create detailed sculptural scenes, often depicting human struggle, pain and anguish. A common theme in his works is the disparity of privilege, the distinction between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ of society. He shares that this is influenced by his background, recalling how his family was poverty-stricken, stuck in the depths of deprivation and despair. He aims for his art to be a reminder of empathy and the interconnectedness of humanity. Debabrata currently lives and works in Kolkata.
