About the Artist
Francis Newton Souza was Born in Saligao, Goa. He attended the Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai before being expelled for participating in the 'Quit India' movement. He was one of the founding members of the Progressive Artists Group and was best known for his inventive human forms. His unrestrained and graphic style has created thought-provoking, powerful images. In 1949, he left for London, where he received recognition for his show at Gallery One. In 1967, he migrated to New York where he later received the prestigious Guggenheim International Award. Souza's works have been featured in many museums and galleries across the globe. He passed away in Mumbai in 2002.
