About the Art Form
Venkat Shyam, a multidisciplinary Gond artist from Sijhora, Madhya Pradesh, is renowned for blending traditional art forms with contemporary themes. As the nephew of Gond art pioneer Jangarh Singh Shyam, Venkat Raman began his artistic journey at 13 under his uncle's mentorship, gaining exposure to artists like Jagdish Swaminathan and Manjit Bawa. Despite early challenges, including working as a house painter and domestic help, he fully embraced art following his uncle’s passing, dedicating himself to promoting Pardhan Gond art in the mainstream. Venkat Raman's works span murals, etchings, illustrated books, and animation, capturing themes from folklore and nature to contemporary events like the Mumbai Taj Hotel attacks. His art narrates personal and collective stories and has been exhibited globally. He currently lives and works in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
