About Artist
Sukhnandi Vyam, born in 1983 in Sonpuri, Madhya Pradesh, is a renowned sculptor in the contemporary Pardhan Gond art movement based in Bhopal, initiated by the iconic artist Jangarh Singh Shyam (1960–2001). Both Sukhnandi and Jangarh are members of the Pardhan Gond tribe, traditionally tasked with preserving cultural heritage, genealogies, and passing down sacred myths and histories through storytelling and songs. Although the role of Pardhan Gond bards is still respected within the community, their traditional practices have become less relevant as tribal patronage has waned over time. Sukhnandi has explored various mediums, including clay, canvas, metal, and wood, but his wood sculptures have gained the most recognition. In 2002, he was awarded the Madhya Pradesh State Government Award for his intricately carved wood ritual mangrohi wedding totem. His wooden sculptures were also featured in Udayan Vajpeyi's influential book Jangarh Kalam (published by Vanya Prakashan under the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Welfare Department).Artwork
