About the Art Form

Originating in the temple town of Nathdwara in Udaipur (Rajasthan), pichwais are fabric paintings that are placed behind the idol of Shreenathji, the child avatar of Krishna venerated by the Pushtimarg cult. The word Pichwai derives from the Sanskrit words 'pich' (back) and 'wais' (hanging). The painting is a ritualistic textile which has also been collected by patrons of decorative and traditional art forms. Over the centuries a vast visual iconography has developed around the cult of Shreenathji, the pichwais being the manifestations of this century old living tradition.
