About the Art Form
Originating in Gujrat, Mata ni Pachedi are travelling textile temples venerated by the nomadic Vaghari community. According to lore, this community was barred from entering temples due to their low caste status. As a result of their resilient devotion to the mother goddess, they createdtheir own shrines on cloth. They hung these textiles indoors, directing their worship to the 2D religious narrative. The painting's composition usually followsa set pattern, with the Mother Goddess dominating the central area, surrounded by deities and commoners worshipping her.
