About Artist
Sudhir Khastgir was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh in 1907. He graduated from Visva-Bharati University at Santiniketan in 1929, under Nandalal Bose.A prolific artist, Khastgir was known for his 'Indian style' of painting. His classic works include paintings of scenes from Indian mythologies, women, and village life. He became the first art teacher at the newly opened Doon School in 1935 and taught there for over twenty years. Khastgir held several shows across India and Europe. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Art in 1937. He was awarded the Padma Shri award by Government of India in 1957, for his significant contributions to Indian art. He built a house in Santiniketan in 1961 and moved there. He died on 6 June 1974.
