Shamshad Husain (Maharashtra)

About Artist

Shamshad Husain (1946–2015) was an acclaimed Indian artist known for his evocative portrayal of human figures and his deep exploration of environmental themes. Born in Mumbai and the son of the legendary M.F. Husain, Shamshad carved out his unique artistic path while grappling with the legacy of his father's influence. Husain began his formal art education at M.S. University, Baroda, an institution he recalled for its freedom and openness to experimentation. He later continued his studies at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London, where he engaged with Western art traditions, balancing his Indian identity with late-Modernist influences. He received significant recognition, including the National Award from Lalit Kala Akademi in 1983 and a Government of India Fellowship for Art from 1983 to 1985. His work was exhibited worldwide, including at the Biennials of Tokyo, Dhaka, Ankara, and Bhopal.
