About Artist
Born in Meerut, Navjot moved to Mumbai in 1967 where she studied both fine and applied arts at the Sir J. J. School of Art. Her rich career spans over five decades, during which she has experimented with a spectrum of media, including painting, sculpture, installation and video. Altaf explores various disciplinary boundaries reflecting her long-term preoccupation with social justice, knowledge systems and indigenous cultures of the Adivasi in India's tumultuous region of Bastar. She has held a number of solo shows including, 'Lost Text' at The Guild, Alibaug (2018), 'How Perfect Perfection Can Be', The Guild, Alibaug (2016) , 'Horn in the Head', Talwar Gallery, New Delhi, India, (2013) and 'A Place in New York', The Guild, Mumbai and New York (2009/2010). She has recently participated in the 11th Shanghai Biennale (2016), 'Making Sense of Crisis - Art as Schizoanalysis', KHOJ, New Delhi, India (2015) and 'Dead Reckoning: Whorled Explorations', Second Edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Kochi, India (2014). A Retrospective Exhibit of her work, 'The Earth's Heart Torn Out' was held at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai in 2018-19.Artwork
