About Artist

Haku Shah, born in Valod, Gujarat is a Gandhian and a well-known figurative painter of folk and tribal art. He attended the Baroda School of Art and is considered an authority on folk and tribal art. When Shah used to teach at the Gandhi Ashram in Gujarat, he came in contact with the Rani Paraj tribe, from whom he drew major inspiration and collected many images. He has received several awards including the Padma Shri (1989), the Jawarharlal Nehru Fellowship and the Kala Ratna for his contribution to art. He lives and works in Ahmedabad.
