About Artist
Arpana Caur, born in 1954 in Delhi to a Sikh family. She completed her post-graduation in literature from Delhi University before studying painting at Central St. Martins College of Art in London. Since 1974, Caur has actively exhibited her works across the globe. Her solos apart from Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Bangalore and Chennai have been held in galleries in London, Glasgow, Berlin, Amsterdam, Singapore, Munich, New York and in Stockholm and Copenhagen National Museum. Her retrospective of 40 years was held in National Gallery of Modern Art Bangalore in 2016 with Svaraj Archive. Her paintings are deeply influenced by political events and social issues such as the Sikh massacre, often focusing on women's everyday experiences. Caur's work draws inspiration from traditional Indian art forms like Gond, Gondna, miniature painting as well as Pahari miniatures. Her paintings are characterised by a strong sense of mysticism, incorporating elements from literature, devotional poetry, and religious thought. Her works are part of major collections, including the Museums of Modern Art in New Delhi, Mumbai, and several international museums, such as The Victoria and Albert Museum in London and The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
