About Artist
Altaf, born in 1942 in Baroda, Gujarat, was a prominent artist known for his socially conscious paintings. Educated in England, Altaf was actively involved in student movements against the Vietnam War and, upon returning to India, joined the Progressive Youth Movement (PRIYOM), a leftist organisation. His work often conveyed a sense of unease and concern about societal issues Influenced by his sister, the noted painter Nasreen, and his experiences at Scindia School in Gwalior under the guidance of art instructor Niyogi, Altaf developed a passion for painting. Despite coming from a wealthy family, Altaf was drawn to Marxist ideologies, which significantly influenced his early work, his art was a tool for expressing his ideological beliefs and addressing the struggles of the marginalized in society. His retrospective exhibition at Sakshi Gallery in Mumbai in 2002 showcased four decades of his work. DAG also held a retrospective show of the artist in 2017. The artist passed away in 2005.Artwork
