A. A. Raiba was born into a humble tailor's family in central Mumbai, and came from mixed ancestry of Hindu, Maratha and Islamic lineage. While at school, his teacher noticed his talent for drawing and suggested he pursue art. After a brief stint learning the basics of art, he enrolled at Mumbai's prestigious Sir J. J. School of Art in 1942, under the tutelage of Charles Gerrard. He started out as a mural and miniature artist but went on to experiment with various media and styles. Living modestly with limited means, he developed a method to make his own canvas from jute that gave his paintings a distinct characteristic. He won several medals from the Bombay Art Society and his paintings are in collections of the Cairo Museum, Egypt and in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi. In 1962, Raiba was awarded one among the ten best exhibits of the year by the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. He passed away in Mumbai on 15 April 2016 at the age of 93.
